Frequently asked questions
- How much can I claim for a preventive health check-up under Section 80D?
- Up to ₹5,000 in a financial year. It isn't an extra limit: it counts within your overall Section 80D limit of ₹25,000 (₹50,000 if you're 60 or older). A ₹5,000 check-up uses the whole of it.
- Can I claim 80D in the new tax regime?
- No. Section 80D — including the ₹5,000 for preventive health check-ups — is a deduction of the old tax regime. If you file under the new regime, the default since FY 2023-24, it doesn't apply; choose the old regime when you file to claim it.
- How much tax does a ₹5,000 health check-up save?
- The ₹5,000 comes off your taxable income, so the tax you save depends on your slab: about ₹260 at 5%, ₹1,040 at 20% and ₹1,560 at 30%, including the 4% cess.
- How does the ₹3,500 cashback work?
- Book this ₹5,000 check-up and ₹3,500 comes back to you as cashback, paid to the bank account you add on Vendeye.
- Can I claim the check-up for my parents?
- Yes — for yourself, your spouse, your dependent children and your parents. The ₹5,000 for preventive check-ups is one limit for all of them together, not ₹5,000 each, and it sits within your 80D limits.
- Can I pay for a preventive health check-up in cash and still claim 80D?
- Yes. A preventive health check-up is the one Section 80D expense that can be paid in cash; health insurance premiums can't be.
- My insurer reimburses health check-ups. Can I also claim 80D?
- Only for what you paid yourself. If your insurer pays the check-up back, that part isn't your expense to deduct.
- What does the check-up include?
- Blood sugar (HbA1c and average glucose), a complete blood count, cholesterol and lipids, liver and kidney function, thyroid (T3, T4, TSH), iron studies and a complete urine analysis — the full list is on this page.
- What do I need to claim it?
- Keep the invoice for the check-up. Claim it under Section 80D when you file your income tax return under the old regime.
- How often should I get a preventive health check-up?
- Once a year is usual, and the 80D limit is yearly too — so a check-up each financial year uses it each time.
